2013-11-5 Rescue Mission of 2 Mountain Climbers Located Around the Yulin Great Cliff

The UH-1H helicopter number NA-517 of the 1st team of the 3rd NASC battalion stationed in Hualien received a notification from the NASC Duty Command Center by phone to implement the mountain rescue mission in the mountain area close to Jhongping Forest Road in Yulin at 08:28 on 5 November. The rescue targets were 2 Taichung citizens 周O屏 and 陳O昌 (male), who were lost in mountains and could not locate themselves. Besides, 陳O昌 was lost in contact. After received the command, the standby crew immediately performed pre-flight prompts at 08:28 on 5 November. The helicopter had its engine turned on at 08:35 and took off from Hualien Airport at 08:42. After contacted with the ground rescue members at 09:07, the helicopter entered the mountain area of Yulin close to the Yulin Great Cliff at a height of 5,000ft. The ceiling of the target zone was around 5,500ft and the crew discovered 陳O昌 at 09:15 on the riverbed of a valley close to the Yulin Great Cliff. The helicopter therefore lowered to 3,600 ft and hovered above a big stone on the riverbed. After rescued 陳O昌 at 09:25, the helicopter took off again and continued to search for周O屏. At 09:30, the helicopter at height of 5,200 ft discovered the second rescue target (周O屏) around the Yulin Great Cliff. As the nearby forest stood high with no landing location, the crew decided to rescue周O屏 by using the hoist system. At 09:35, 周O屏 was rescued and the helicopter left the target zone at 09:36. At 10:05, the helicopter landed at Tzu Chi Hospital and passed the two rescue targets to ground medical personnel before flew back to Hualien Airport at 10:10. The helicopter turned off its engine at 10:20 and the mission was successfully completed.
