Hand signals of rescuer
No problem

Raise the right above the head with the palm facing downward and touching the helmet several times.

  • Meaning: procedure is completed and everything is clear.
  • When to use:
    1. Use this no-problem signal to tell the instructor or crew chief that it is safe to get off the skid as the helicopter is maneuvering.
    2. Use this no-problem signal to tell the crew chief above that the rescuer has reached the ground and everything is clear.
  • Instructions:eyes on the crew chief and tap the helmet 2 or 3 times.
Going up
  • • Meaning:go higher
  • • When to use:when the rescuer finds that the altitude is too low during the maneuvering.
  • • Instructions:eyes on crew chief and obstacle and use the hand signal continuously.
Going down
  • Meaning: go lower
  • When to use:when the rescuer finds that the altitude is too high during the maneuvering.
  • Instructions: eyes on crew chief and obstacle and use the hand signal continuously.
Pause

Extend both arms outwards at shoulder height with both hands making fists and facing downwards.

  • Meaning: maintain the current condition
  • When to use:
    1. When the rescuer believes that the current condition has to be maintained during the maneuvering.
    2. Use the pause signal for transition.
  • Instructions:eyes on the crew chief, keep both arm steady until the condition is relieved.
Direction pointing
  • Meaning: correct the direction or point at the right direction
  • When to use: when the rescuer finds that the helicopter has to move left or right during the maneuvering.
  • Instructions:eyes on crew chief and obstacle and use the hand signal continuously.
2 to 5m from the ground (rappelling)
  • Meaning: signal the height and reduce the lowering speed
  • When to use: this signal is used when the rescuer is lowered from the helicopter and now 2 to 5m from the ground. This is to tell the crew chief that he/she is 2 to 5m from the ground.
  • Instructions: eyes on crew chief and obstacle and signal with arms or legs 2 or 3 times.
No problem, go up

Raise the left arm above the head and make circles with the index finger.

  • Meaning: make sure that the ascending procedure is completed.
  • When to use:
    1. The rescuer completes the procedure on the ground and is ready to ascend.
    2. The rescuer checks that the buckles and gears are safe and secured as he/she is 2 to 5m above ground. At this moment it is time for the motor check of the helicopter, and the rescuer signals the crew chief to ascend with the no-problem signal.
  • Instructions:eyes on crew chief and obstacle and use the hand signal continuously.
Emergency
  • Meaning:This is to tell that the rescuer is in an emergency.
  • When to use:the rescuer may use this signal to inform the crew chief of a possible danger during the maneuvering.
  • Instructions:eyes on crew chief and obstacle and use the hand signal continuously.
